The Komodo Dragon
Meet the deadliest Predator, Meet the Komodo dragon! The largest lizard in the world, and certainly one of the deadliest! This powerful reptile dominates the dry volcanic island of central Indonesia! Growing over 10 feet in length and weighing up to 350 pounds, it will hunt deer, pigs, wild horses, water buffalo, and essentially anything it can overpower. Its hunting tactic is that of an opportunistic hunter, and it uses camouflage and surprise to attack its prey.
When it comes to teeth, the komodo is like no other lizard! Other lizards have simple peg- like teeth, but because of its gruesome diet, there is something deadly about the komodos’ monster bite! To start with, the Komodo dragon’s saliva is teeming with bacteria (it has 50 strains of virulent bacteria), making a single bite lethal. Using this unique feature, the komodo will ambush the prey, and then make the lethal bite. Afterwards, it only needs to wait for the poison to take effect! What the komodo lacks in speed, it makes up for in smell. The komodo is able to detect the aroma of meat over 2 miles away, and can easily track the prey that is dieing from the lethal bite. Once the feeding frenzy begins, and the dragons start to eat, we begin to notice another peculiar thing about these lizards’ teeth. Their teeth are designed to saw off huge chunks of flesh. It’s more like a shark’s mouth than a lizard’s; the teeth have razor sharp serrated cutting edges just like that of a circular saw. The jaw is full of these saw like teeth (up to 60 teeth), which allow the animal to tear apart an animal in no time. Moreover, if one or more of these teeth break off during feeding, it will just grow back. In the meantime, just like a shark, the dragon has rows of teeth in waiting, packed into the jaw. This means that as soon as one tooth falls off, it will be replaced. Indeed, the komodo is one of nature’s most powerful predators. Yet as fearsome as these predators are, they are no match for nature’s most potent predator: Man. Only a few thousand of these creatures remain in the wild, as a result of poaching, loss of prey, and loss of habitat. Those that do remain are a reminder of nature’s brutal power! A power that has evolved over one hundred million years! The Komodo dragon has survived all of these years on savage skill alone, proving that the dragons bite is far worse than its bark!
The closest remnant of the dinosaurs that we have.
I hope these magnificent creatures are preserved for many generations.
That is one scary critter. Sure hope I don’t run across one someday!
You said it, Dale. Wouldn’t wanna run across these things even with a weapon at hand.
This is a very informative article about Komodo Dragon. It is indeed the largest member in the Lizard family and has a scary face among the reptiles.
@Information, I do agree it is, hopefully there will be more articles posted, seing by the last post date.
